Ultrasound is a painless diagnostic tool that allows us to image various soft tissues in the body. Analyzing sound waves to evaluate density, ultrasound creates detailed visual images of internal organs. More specifically the ultrasound probe sends out sound waves and then translates the returning echoes into images. We most commonly use this technology to evaluate abdominal organs such as the liver, kidneys, and intestines. Ultrasound is also key for imaging the bladder, spleen, and monitoring conditions over time. For most animals an ultrasound exam can be performed without sedation, although a section of hair may need to be clipped.
